SUA Tour: Deep into the heart of the Basque Country

This excursion is part of Romotur’s “In the Element: The Deep Basque Country” series. Sua means “fire” in Basque. This excursion provides a mix of nature, tradition, and history, allowing you to connect with the essence of the Basque Country in a laid-back and authentic manner, all against a stunning mountain backdrop with peaks shooting into the sky like flames. After a brief stop in Urkiola Natural Park to enjoy the views, we will head to a latxa sheep farm for a hands-on glimpse into the traditional pastoral way of life. You will be able to interact with the flock, make curds and fresh cheese, and taste the Basque Idaizabal cheese made from these sheep’s milk along with some local txakoli white wine. Having opened up your appetite, it will be time for lunch in a typical Basque farm house or baserri. From there, we will descend into the valley to the town of Elorrio. This medieval town at the border of the three Basque provinces prospered thanks to trade with the Spanish colonies in America and arms manufacturing industry, among other factors. This affluence is reflected in the numerous and well-preserved manor houses and palaces. Before heading back to Bilbao, we will make one last stop at the necropolis of Argiñeta, just a few minutes outside the Elorrio town center.
