A Step Forward in an Ongoing Journey
At Romotur DMC, we are pleased to share an important milestone in our commitment to responsible, efficient and forward-thinking tourism in the Basque Country: we have recently obtained the ETI – Smart Tourist Company certification (UNE 178510) issued by AENOR, as well as the Biosphere Sustainable certification.
These recognitions are not a final achievement, but rather the beginning of a continuous process to improve the way we operate and to reinforce our dedication to sustainability and excellence in tourism in the Basque Country.
ETI – Becoming a Smart Tourist Company in the Basque Country
Innovation and Data to Improve How We Work

The ETI certification acknowledges organisations that integrate innovation, sustainability, accessibility and continuous improvement into their tourism management model.
For Romotur, this means working in a more strategic and structured way to:
- optimise the experience of tourism in the Basque Country,
- increase the efficiency of our services, and
- contribute to sustainable development.
the ETI standard provides a framework that helps us streamline processes, adopt new tools and evaluate our decisions more rigorously. Obtaining the certification is an important step, but the real value lies in the ongoing work of refining and improving the way we operate every day.
Biosphere
Applying a Global Framework for Sustainable Tourism in the Basque Country

Alongside the ETI, Romotur has also obtained the Biosphere Sustainable certification, an internationally recognised system aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and global criteria for responsible tourism.
Biosphere promotes sustainability through a holistic, measurable approach that covers environmental responsibility, cultural preservation, social impact and economic viability – values that are very important to tourism in the Basque Country.
For a DMC like Romotur, this means:
- designing experiences that reflect and integrate local culture,
- collaborating with suppliers who share a responsible vision, and
- reducing the impact of our operations.
As with ETI, the certification is only the first step. The Biosphere methodology encourages continuous improvement, helping organisations track their progress, identify new areas for action and evolve towards more sustainable models year after year.
Being Biosphere certified also reflects our participation in the Ethical Code of Tourism of Euskadi, reinforcing our commitment to responsible tourism in the Basque Country.
Looking Ahead
Both certifications strengthen our framework for working in a more innovative, responsible and strategic way. But more importantly, they remind us that excellence is not a static goal—it is a constant process of learning, evaluating and evolving.
We look forward to continuing this journey together with our partners, clients and the broader tourism community.
