This excursion is part of Romotur’s “In the Element: The Deep Basque Country” series. Lurra means “earth” in Basque. This full-day excursion explores the lands of the “wild west” of the Basque province of Bizkaia. Our first stop will literally take us into the earth to the mystical Pozalagua Cave for a guided tour of the awe-inspiring stalactites and stalagmites that have been crafted over centuries. Then we will delve into the rich industrial history of the region with a guided visit to the Boinas La Encartada Museum where you will learn about the evolution and production of the iconic boinas (Basque berets). Before lunch, we will have time to wander through the cobbled streets of Balmaseda, one of the oldest towns in Bizkaia dating back to the 11th century and famous for its Easter procession. After lunch in a local restaurant, it will be time for a visit to the iconic Loizaga Tower, which holds an unexpected treasure: a fascinating private Rolls Royce collection that transports you beyond beautiful automobiles, unveiling memorable anecdotes that everyone can appreciate and connect with. An alternative activity that may be integrated in this full-day excursion is a visit and tasting at a a winery that produces Txakoli, a special Basque white wine.
