During the month of August, the Romotur DMC team completed the Queer Destinations training program, earning the Queer Destinations Committed certification. This training focused on inclusivity and diversity of LGBTQ+ travelers. Romotur DMC now joins a community of service providers who are openly committed to ensuring safe and inclusive travel experiences for all.
Queer Destinations is an organization whose purpose is to create more inclusive, respectful, and safe spaces for LGBTQ+ travelers. It aims to help destinations and companies in the tourism industry adapt their services to meet the needs of this collective
. This is achieved through initiatives like the Queer Destinations Committed certification.
LGBTQ+ travelers
The flagship training program, Hospitality Meets Diversity, educates tourism professionals on the history as well as needs of LGBTQ+ community and LGBTQ+ travelers. Also, the course covers real-life case studies which help employees and companies better understand the diversity of the collective. It helps to raise awareness about certain assumptions we unconsciously hold. And how these can affect our interactions with clients from the LGBTQ+ community. In addition, it helps to clarify a lot of terminology we hear in related to the collective. Not only does this certification and training promote inclusivity for LGBTQ+ travelers, but also for employees within these organizations.
The Basque Country: A LGBTQ+ Committed Destination
Various destinations and companies worldwide have completed the Queer Destinations training. This includes the Basque Country. The Basque Tourism Agency has encouraged members of the local tourism sector to carry out the training. In doing so, it has made Euskadi the first region in Europe to implement the distinction across its territories.
Currently, more than 50 companies in transportation, DMCs like Romotur, operations, restaurants, bars, and museums, have completed the Hospitality Meets Diversity educational program. This sets a very clear message: Ongi etorri (welcome) LGBTQ+ travelers!
